Florian Lighting is the lighting brand of Florian Designs, a California based company. While we are a new brand, our Belgian workshop partners have been handcrafting lights and switches for over twenty years.
We believe every material choice is intentional and lighting should be connected to the architecture.
We work with architects, interior designers, builders and AV integrators who need products that hold up, aesthetically and structurally, over the life of a project.
Two workshops.
Belgian Craftsmanship. 20+ years.
We work directly with two Belgian workshops. One has handcrafted switch plates for over twenty years. Artisans sand, polish, and etch the surface, then treat it in galvanic baths. The material must be touched to be understood.
The workshop behind our ceiling and outdoor lighting was started by an electrician in 1986, is still run by his family, and believes in using high-quality materials and controlled finishing processes to ensure consistency. Today, their products are present in over 40 countries worldwide, continuing to shape architectural lighting with precision and intent.
The name Florian comes from the Latin florere, to flower or to come into full form. The root is flos, floris: flower. It traveled through Central Europe and became a name carried for centuries in Belgium, where our products are made.
The Caffè Florian in Venice, opened in 1720 and still running, was where artists, architects and makers of things gathered. A meeting place of European craft and culture. There is something in that history that felt right for what we are building.
We chose it because it sounded like something that takes its time.
